Service Description: ABOUT THE ZOOM OUT MESSAGE WEB SERVICE: This web service contains one layer, Zoom Out Message, containing a single polygon with an extent encompassing a worldwide map projected in Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere). The purpose of the service is to provide web map authors with a layer that can be customized to display when a web map user zooms in past a threshold scale, with a message instructing the user to Please zoom out to view map features. This service is published with dynamic symbology so that the polygon fill is configurable within a web map.
WHY USE THE ZOOM OUT MESSAGE WEB SERVICE: Web map authors that need to limit the visibility of map features at large map scales often accomplish this by setting a visibility scale range on the layer being displayed. For example, the map author may not want users to zoom in the map and view the features at a large scale because this may cause the user to draw false conclusions about the precision of the mapping. By setting a visibility scale, the features disappear after the web map user zooms in past the threshold scale. To reduce potential confusion when the features disappear, map authors can include this Zoom Out Message web service in the web map to provide the user with a message instructing them to Please zoom out to view map features.
HOW TO USE THE ZOOM OUT MESSAGE WEB SERVICE:
1) Add this Zoom Out Message web service to the web map.
2) Adjust the visibility range so that it appears when users zoom in to precisely the same scale that the map features disappear.
3) Optional: Adjust the symbology style of the polygon in the Zoom Out Message layer to provide a partially or completely opaque mask layer that appears along with the zoom out message.
An example of the Zoom Out Message web service being used in a web map may be found at the EPA GeoPlatform Online.
Security classification: Public. Access constraints: None. Use constraints: None.
